Summary of Devotion by Loretta Stegen - 28 May 2010

"Thus saith the LORD unto me, Go and get thee a linen girdle, and put
it upon thy loins, and put it not in water. So I got a girdle
according to the word of the LORD, and put it on my loins. And the
word of the LORD came unto me the second time, saying, Take the girdle
that thou hast got, which is upon thy loins, and arise, go to
Euphrates, and hide it there in a hole of the rock. So I went, and hid
it by Euphrates, as the LORD commanded me.
And it came to pass after many days, that the LORD said unto me,
Arise, go to Euphrates, and take the girdle from thence, which I
commanded thee to hide there. Then I went to Euphrates, and digged,
and took the girdle from the place where I had hid it: and, behold,
the girdle was marred, it was profitable for nothing. Then the word of
the LORD came unto me, saying, Thus saith the LORD, After this manner
will I mar the pride of Judah, and the great pride of Jerusalem. This
evil people, which refuse to hear my words, which walk in the
imagination of their heart, and walk after other gods, to serve them,
and to worship them, shall even be as this girdle, which is good for
nothing. For as the girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so have I
caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house
of Judah, saith the LORD; that they might be unto me for a people, and
for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not
hear." (Jeremiah 13:1-11).

"Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may
exalt you in due time:" (1 Peter 5:6).

It is terrible if God should say that He would make you a useless
vessel. Note the sins of Israel. They were filled with pride and
refused to listen to God's word.

Often when we are filled with pride like Balaam we are blinded. The
donkey spoke to him and he was so angry and proud that he actually
answered without realising that a donkey is not supposed to speak. He
said the donkey made a fool of him whereas he made a fool of himself.

Pray that God would reveal Himself to you. How will you stand with
such a proud heart before God?

In a child pride is obvious, but in grown-ups it's a hidden thing
which only manifests now and again. But it is a hidden cancer which
rots your heart away.

Remember how Herod was so proud that he accepted the praise of men and
was struck dead by God and eaten by worms.

Remember even how Hezekiah's pride caused God's wrath to be on him and
his nation until he humbled himself. It says God wanted to show
Hezekiah kindness but his pride prevented that kindness.

It's like someone who wants to help you but you're too proud to accept
the help and you miss many blessings.

Pride is a disease known to man that makes everyone else sick except
themselves (in their own eyes).

There's a children story of a frog and two ducks in a pond. Soon the
pond dried up. The ducks knew they could easily fly to another pond
but what about their poor friend the frog. So they devised a plan:
they got a stick and told the frog to hold on with his beak and so
they flew off. As they passed over a farmer's yard, the farmer looked
up at the amazing sight and shouted, "What a clever idea! Who thought
of that?". "I did", replied the frog.

Often a very proud person thinks he's very humble.

Pray that God will reveal your heart to you as He sees it. He's the
only one who can give you this humble heart.
