Summary of Devotion by Dr Albu van Eeden - 8 October 2010

"Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee." (1 Kings 3:12).

"Then came there two women, that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him. And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house. And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house. And this woman’s child died in the night; because she overlaid it. And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thine handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear."

"And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king. Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living. And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it. Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof." (1 Kings 3:16-27).

This is often the attitude of those with the "dead child", "kill the living child and it will be neither mine nor yours."

Those with the dead child in the world do the same. They cannot stand it that they alone are perishing, but they want you to lose your spiritual life too.

If such a one continue in such a state where they remain spiritually dead, they reach a point where they decide in cold blood to work for darkness.
These are the stages, first claim to be careless and then active hating of the good.

Note also that everyone claim to have the live child. So you will find even those who are spiritually dead and have killed the Christ-child in their lives by carelessness and compromise, will still claim that they are spiritually alive.

Secondly the woman killed the child in her sleep. It is the time when you and I are spiritually asleep, and relax that we're not on our guard and the Christ child is killed in our lives.

So many after a hard day's work want to relax a bit and goes on the internet and falls into sin.

However a mother with a child, when she sleeps, is always half-awake to be sure the child is all right. So too even when you relax you must still be watching and checking that you do not grieve the Lord and so kill the Child.

It was while the other woman slept that the woman with the dead child stole her live child. It is like when another starts an argument, and you argue back and maybe even win the argument but you've lost the child.

When you realise the other doesn't want to serve the Lord, leave them and even let them win the argument, but you have saved the Child alive.

Those with the dead Child will also keep fiddling with the one with the living child.

You also cannot just take another's child. The Child must be born in you. If you simply copy another Christian it will be obvious that the Child is not yours. You must personally go through the agony of Child bearing so that the Child is part of you. The Gospel must work personally for you with your particular character and makeup. We don't all have the same weaknesses and strengths. So the Gospel must work personally in our lives, otherwise it will be fake.

Half a child is a dead child. If the king divided the child, it would've been dead.
Half a Gospel is a dead Gospel. If they persuade you to compromise then you have a dead Gospel. No, you must accept he Gospel in its fullness, otherwise it is dead.

Let us never, never, never settle for half a child.

Rather lose an argument. To lose an argument can be very painful at times.
